Some of the manufacturing processes used deliver strong fabrics that are color fast and can be machine washed without cause for concern. Other manufacturing processes, however, produce fabrics that have to be handled with the utmost care so as to prevent the fabric from being damaged. To ensure proper care of your rayon fabrics we highly recommend you give focus to the care labels on your garments or accessories.

Yesteryear rayon could only be dry cleaned. But again, with some of the modern manufacturing processes such as coating fabrics with a chemical finish, rayon fabrics can be machine washed. Though this process is used on many rayon garments today, dry cleaning is still the preferred cleaning choice for most people and indeed the best choice by far.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION

Rayon fabrics that are untreated should not be washed in a washing machine since they can and will shrink and experience faded colors and a minimized soft feel. With that said, it is important that consumers pay close attention to the cleaning care label and take note if it specifically says ‘dry clean only.” If such is the case, no deviation is acceptable unless you are prepared to replace your special rayon garment with a whole new wardrobe piece.

If you have machine washable rayon garments, remember that they will probably still become overly wrinkled when they are washed and will need ironing before you can wear them. If this happens, be sure you set your iron on a medium heat and iron the garment on the opposite side of the fabric. This will avoid burning the fabric or yellowing the garment. Be aware that if you burn or scorch rayon fabrics there is no solution to returning the fabric to its original state. Once burned or scorched, your once favorite garment is now permanently damaged and more than likely unwearable, so beware!
