Important Facts to Know About Dry Cleaning

Here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations our reputation and success depends upon our quality of work, our top of the line services and our friendly, professional team of specialists. With that said, we believe it is important for our valued clients to share in some important facts about dry cleaning and clothing care.   Here are some of the top facts about dry cleaning we want to share with you.

  • Not All Stains Are Removable – Removing stains successfully is primarily dependent upon the type of the stain, the fabric of the garment, and the color fastness of the dye. Though our professionals are highly skilled and trained to identify and recognize stains, fabrics and the best approach to removing them, not all stains can be successfully removed. Ink, and stains that have set into the fabric after home cleaning treatment attempts are two good examples of those that are impossible to remove. Further, spots and stains that are allowed to set without treatment will, over time, oxidize and become permanent.
  • You Should Never Put Away Clothes That Have Stains – Never put away a garment that has any type of stain on it. For starters, if a stain contains sugar or any type of food they will easily attract insects which will eat away at the fibers and create holes. In addition, putting garments away without properly cleaning them will more times than not lead to discoloration or oxidation of stains.
  • Some Garments Can Shrink – All types of clothing can shrink if the material/fabric has not been properly preshrunk. In addition, if any segment of a specific garment was not properly stabilized during the manufacturing of the garment then it too can shrink.
  • Care Labels on Clothing Are Not Always Correct – Though we would like to believe that manufacturers would be required to provide proper care instructions on garments, the truth is that they are not. The Federal Trade Commission’s Care Label Guidelines do not require them to test garments before care instructions are assigned and only require they include “reasonable basis” for their care instructions. Most manufacturers, therefore, do not test garments before affixing care labels.
  • There is No Truth in the Claim that Dry Cleaned Clothes Have a Shorter Lifespan – The Drying Cleaning & Laundry Institute, with over 100 years of research and testing in the textile industry, has never disclosed any proof or indication that dry cleaning procedures wear clothes out faster and shorter lifespans. On the flip side of that, however, garments that are labelled ‘dry clean only’ that are not professionally cleaned on a regular basis do experience a shorter life span.
