Fabrics, Fabrics and More Fabrics

Fabrics

Understanding different types of fabrics is important and challenging at the same time. Whether you are looking to buy a new garment, are tailoring new clothing items or just need to determine how to care for a garment, understanding how they are made helps most.

Here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations our team of skilled specialists wants to share some insight on some of the most popular fabrics today.

Fabrics, Fabrics and More Fabrics

There are basically two types of fibers used in clothing; synthetic and natural. Your natural fibers come from animals and plants while your synthetic fibers are entirely man made. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular materials today.

  • Cotton – By far the most popular material across the globe, cotton is a very soft natural fabric that is light and fluffy. It is remarkably comfortable as well as durable and breathes very well. The downside is that cotton can shrink and tends to wrinkle easily.
  • Chiffon – This lightweight sheer material has a bit of a rough feel to it. It is often used for dresses and blouses as well as wedding gowns primarily because it is so flowy and light.
  • Lace – This material is so delicate, stylish and even very elegant. It is extremely soft and is often used to add style and charm to nightgowns, wedding gowns and wedding veils as well.
  • Linen – This fabric is made from natural flax plants and is quite lightweight. It is so smooth and cool and every bit absorbent and machine washable. It can be used in a number of items from clothing and tablecloths to drapes, towels and even bedsheets.
  • Silk – Silk is a natural material, very soft and smooth and presents with a shimmering, elegant look. It is very strong and durable and must be handled delicately. It is best to hand wash silk items. It is often used in lingerie products as well as shirts and wedding gowns.
  • Satin – Satin is very sleek and extremely smooth. It can be very elegant and has an obvious glossy look. Satin is also matte on one side and slippery and glossy on the other. Because of its light weight, and very sleek and smooth surface, satin tends to be used in lingerie, evening dresses and gorgeous wedding gowns.
  • Wool – Wool is an all-natural fiber that can be quite itchy. It most definitely keeps in body warmth and is a very long-lasting material. Wrinkle free and very durable, wool can be a bit expensive and must be either dry cleaned or hand washed. It is primarily used for sweaters, coats and socks.
  • Synthetics – Some of the most common synthetic materials are nylon, spandex and polyester. Typically, resistant to stains and shrinking, synthetics are very durable and

offer much flexibility. Most synthetics are wrinkle free and tend to protect the body from moisture. Synthetic fabrics are form fitting and more times than not, very comfortable.
