Deodorant Stains Can Ruin the Best of Garments and Fabrics

Deodorant Stains

I think we would all agree that deodorants can certainly ruin even the most expensive garments and fabrics. The summer heat, humidity and body sweat can certainly pose a real problem for many of us. For most people, deodorant is the perfect solution. However, it may be time to change out your deodorant and preserve the lifespan of your favorite summer wardrobe. Here at Jimmy Cleaners and Alterations, we want to take a bit of time to help our clients understand how damaging deodorant stains can be.

The Real Damaging Culprit

Have you noticed that your favorite linen shirt is discolored specifically under the armpits? If so, the culprit would be your personal deodorant or antiperspirant. Both deodorants and antiperspirants contain a number of chemicals. From aluminum chloride, and fragrances to alcohol the acidic ingredients in these products are many. When acidic ingredients blend with body sweat, your garments become weakened and stained. Fabrics such as rayon, linen, cotton and synthetic blends suffer even more when coming in contact with deodorants or antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride. These fabrics can suffer under arm tears as a result of this powerful chemical making it very difficult for dry cleaners to detect until such time the actual tear is visible.

With this in mind, the team of specialists here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations wants to help our clients to better understand what happens and know exactly what they can do to minimize any damage to their favorite garments and fabrics.

What You Should Do

If you have noticed that many of your favorite garments have become discolored and faded chances are your deodorant or antiperspirant contains a lot of alcohol or aluminum. With that said, you may want to engage in the following to minimize deodorant stains.

  • Switch over to a product that has little to no aluminum or alcohol.
  • When applying your deodorant allow the product to completely dry before putting on your garments.
  • Clean your garments as soon as possible after wearing them.
  • Never let your soiled garments that need cleaning, sit in your car in the heat for extended periods of time. This will set the stains in and make cleaning and removing stains a whole lot more difficult.

Damage Can Be Costly

When clothing items present with vertical tears and holes, more times than not the damage is the result of a chemical reaction of deodorants or antiperspirants and body sweat. The chemical process that occurs causes the fibers in the garments to degrade and actually dissolve. When this type of damage occurs to garments, it is impossible to resolve the problem and restore the garment to its pre-damaged state. With this thought in mind, you want to take steps necessary to protect all your favorite expensive garments by using deodorants that contain no alcohol or aluminum. It can certainly be costly to continuously replace clothing items that have been damaged and rendered unwearable as a result of chemical reactions.
