Well, the wonderful fall season is in full bloom with many more scenic weeks ahead and picture-perfect moments to share, including the falling leaves, comfy temperatures, lots of sunshine and above all lots and lots of fall foliage. With that said, the folks here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations want to remind all our valued clients that this is also the time of year to begin making winter preparations for your home. The cold and snowy season can make unexpected demands on us and present with challenges, so you want to ensure that your home is prepared and ready to handle whatever comes your way.
SERVICES WE OFFER HERE AT JIMMY’S CLEANERS
Among the variety of cleaning services we offer here at Jimmy’s Cleaners is that of fire, smoke and water restoration to damaged clothing, linens, curtains, rugs and other household items. Often times we see the need for these services because homeowners fail to properly winterize their homes, which is why we want to take this time to offer a simple checklist of winter preparations for your home.
PREPARE YOU HOME FOR THE WINTER SEASON AHEAD
- Inspect your fireplace and chimney – One of the most common, fun-filled activities during the winter months is that of sitting by the fireplace with family and friends and sharing in pleasant conversations, snacks and perhaps even a cocktail. This is also one of the most obvious hazards in your home as well. For this reason, it is imperative that you have your fireplace, flue, and your chimney inspected at minimum once per year to ensure the overall safety of each. Contact a chimney sweep company to assess your system looking for clogged dampers, creosote buildup or any other issues that could ultimately impede your system’s airflow or any other simple function of your fireplace.
- Inspect and perform routine maintenance of your heating system – In advance of the severe cold weather you want to be sure that your furnace is in peak operating condition. Ensuring the overall functionality of your heating system, which also includes your hot water heater, is important to the safety and well-being of your family. A malfunctioning heating system can cause high levels of carbon monoxide to be present in your home. This is one of the primary reasons why you want to schedule an annual inspection as well as routine maintenance of your system.
- Swap out smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries – Before the cold weather sets in, it is a good ideal to install fresh batteries in all your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in your home to ensure that they are functioning properly. Be sure you have a sufficient number of detectors in your home, depending upon the size of your living space. We suggest you be certain that you have detectors on each floor of your home and in each and every bedroom as well. Carbon monoxide detectors are better served when placed in the hallways that border each of the bedrooms in your home.
- Check for insulation issues – Cold weather outdoors can certainly bring the cold temperatures indoor if your home has insufficient insulation. Be sure to check windows
and doors to ensure that they are properly insulated so as to keep the cold air outside and not allow for it to make its way into the interior of your home. Be sure pipes are properly insulated as well to ensure that they do not burst during the cold weather months.
