Beware of that ‘Spot Clean Only’ Label

Spot Clean Only

We all take steps to properly care for and maintain our garments, fabrics and other attire. Sometimes knowing whether to dry clean an item or not can be a bit challenging. More times than not dry clean garments will be donned with the typical ‘dry clean only’ tag which outwardly tells you not to home wash or dry specific garments. Here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations we want to take a moment to familiarize our clients with yet another garment label that can be more than confusing – the ‘spot clean only ‘label found typically on your very high-end designer garments and clothing.

PROBLEMS TO BE AWARE OF

When it’s time to address that spot clean only label on your garment, rest assured you are apt to be confronted with one problem or another. These high-end clothing items are often hand-made and contain all types of delicate trimmings. From delicate lace and beads to any number of other decorative clothing trims, fragile upscale garments can be a cleaning challenge for anyone.

When you see this label on any of your garments be aware that it typically implies that the garment cannot be safely immersed or washed in a commercial cleaning machine of any type. Nor can the garment be laundered or dry cleaned. Rather, the garment will need to be cleaned only by hand. In addition, as part of the hand washing technique, a local spotting agent accompanied by steam and air drying is the proper overall technique to use. However, in adhering to these protocols, there are a couple of problems that can occur. For one, you may notice residual watermarks that occur as a result of the cleaning solvents used. Secondly, the area that you have now cleaned is more than likely going to make its presence known and stand out well above the rest of the garment because that area is much cleaner than the remainder of the fabric. Surely, these are problems we would all like to avoid.

IT’S BEST TO LEAVE THE CLEANING TO THE PROFESSIONALS

The team here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations is equipped to provide proper care and treatment of high-end garments and fabrics. With that said, items that can only be spot cleaned will require us to share possible results and techniques with our clients in advance of cleaning any garments. We want to be sure that clients are made aware of any not so common outcomes that could potentially occur when cleaning spot clean only garments and fabrics. Our team is only authorized to clean these types of items once we are assured the client has a full understanding and comprehension of what is involved. Further, we would need you to acknowledge the simple fact that we cannot guarantee the final outcome of your high-end garment, but are prepared and equipped to take steps necessary to provide adequate cleaning. Certainly, they are not the easiest garments to care for or maintain, but our team of specialists is here to assist.

PERHAPS YOU WILL WANT TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT FABRIC

Before you choose to purchase a garment that has a spot clean only label you may want to do a bit of research or talk to someone with regard to proper cleaning techniques for the specific fabric. When purchasing such a garment you may want to ask the salesperson what the restrictions and the return policy is on the garment if it cannot be cleaned satisfactorily. Though it makes better

sense to simply not buy the garment, sometimes it is that one high-end garment that is sure to satisfy the perfect holiday wardrobe. Whatever the case may be, when wearing a garment with a spot clean only label, be sure to be extra careful to avoid getting the garment heavily soiled and avoid any spotting at all. It’s that time of year again and the team here at Jimmy’s Cleaners and Alterations wants to send along wishes from our family to yours for a joyous and safe holiday season!
