Too-Small Closet?
Are you saddled with the burden of a too-small closet? If your answer is yes, take heart. You’re in good company! Inadequate closet space is a remarkably common problem among Americans. But there is good news. If you don’t already follow the practice of packing away seasonal garments, you’ll be astounded at how much space it can open up for you! Want to learn more? Just take a look at this list of 9 Tips for Storing Your Spring & Summer Wardrobe we’ve put together just for you!
9 Tips for Storing Your Spring & Summer Wardrobe
1) SPRING & SUMMER vs. FALL & WINTER
The first day of fall is nearly here, and soon we’ll be trading our swimsuits and sundresses for warm coats and cozy sweaters.
2) DAMAGED and REPAIR NEEDS
Carefully examine all clothing, accessories, shoes and boots for any damage or repair needs. These will go in a box or basket to be taken to your favorite local dry cleaner’s repair department and shoe repair expert.
3) STAINED
This is another basket designated for your local dry cleaner. As you discover stained garments, it’s always a good idea to clip a brief note to each garment with information on the source of the stain.
4) DIRTY
No judgment here – sometimes articles of clothing somehow eluded the laundry hamper after their last wearing. The main thing is that all items packed away for the season be completely clean. Otherwise, permanent staining and discoloration are a serious possibility.
5) DELICATES
Separate all your delicate and heirloom garments. Consider whether these merit special preservation storage methods, such as acid-free archival boxes and lining sheets, or packing with cedar products for pest damage control.
6) DONATE
This basket and the next are where the rubber really meets the road. Be honest with yourself, and if possible, ask an objective friend to help you choose which items it’s truly time to let go..
7) CIRCULAR FILE
Most of us have a few once loved items we’ve held onto for years, so certain we’d eventually get them fixed so they could return to their frequent rotation. If they’re too stained or damaged to be worn in their current state, please don’t place them in a donations pile. It’s time to let go. Say your tearful goodbyes as you surrender them to the circular file.
8) SEASONAL STORAGE
Everything else goes into the seasonal storage pile. As you prepare to tuck your beloveds away for their long winter’s nap, double-check one more time for any laundering or dry cleaning needs. Items in good, clean condition will be carefully folded and placed into waiting plastic storage bins – preferably with tight-sealing lids . It’s best to separate like garments together for fastest unpacking next year: beachwear together, light dresses together, etc.
9) FAMILY AFFAIR
It’s a good idea to get the entire family in on this practice. Teaching your children at the earliest practical age to participate in this biannual wardrobe care activity is a wonderful way to instill responsibility in them – and substantially lighten Mom or Dad’s housework load!
